A major renovation, this private apartment combines comfort and family living with pared back elegance.
This Victorian London house was, in subsequent years, gradually converted into two smaller apartments that were owned by the local authority and eventually fell into disrepair.
Genevieve & Phil undertook a complete renovation of the property and turned it back into a family home: a two storey apartment with a large garden.
It was a major project, that required an extensive renovation and restoration. This included carefully removing layers and layers of paint and varnish from the original Victorian staircase and wooden shutters by skilled craftspeople, using traditional techniques.
A restrained, pared-back approach to furnishings and decoration, and a mix of textures such as marble sinks and splashbacks, wooden floorboards, encaustic tiles and rich welcoming textiles work together to give the house warmth and serenity.
Within the apartment there is a mix of photography and art; old and new furniture: antiques and pieces of Genevieve & Phil's own design including a large concrete and steel framed dining table that resides in the garden, ready for any party.
From what was a shell of it's former glory, Foreign Bear Studio sought to give the house back it's soul.
The design may look minimal, but to achieve this aesthetic has taken years of experimentation and hard graft by Foreign Bear Studio to let the spaces speak for themselves, to let the house breathe again as a family home.
